If you are new in the region you might not know about one of its biggest happenings: Carnaval. Mainly celebrated in the south of the Netherlands. It stops normal daily life and turns everything upside down, with characteristics such as a Parade, The Carnaval’s Prince and elaborate costumes. Yes, everybody will be wearing costumes, ranging from self-made Coca Cola outfits to Snow White costumes and for the bravest of all, the Onesies. There will be music all day long and food and (especially alcoholic) beverages are widely available.
Don’t worry if you are new, because we have created a list to help you get through these festive days.
1 Lampegat Parade
Maybe you have already seen some indications or seen some changes, but Eindhoven is renamed ‘Lampegat’ during Carnaval. All cities and villages in the south of the Netherlands have a special ‘Carnaval-Name’. On Saturday February 25th, there will be a parade featuring many floats specifically built for Carnaval. If you want to get an impression of what Carnaval is all about, you should witness this parade. The Parade starts at the Effenaar (Dommelstraat) at 12:41 PM.
2 Get a Costume of Your Own
If you are planning to go out and partake in the Carnaval festivities, be sure to do so with a costume of your own. Don’t worry, if you don’t have one you can still partake in the festivities, but what would be better than completely surrendering yourself to the festival.
3 Be Safe When You Drink
Make sure to eat well beforehand and keep yourself hydrated when going out! Alcohol will dehydrate your body and it is hot inside the pubs and clubs. Therefore, make sure to frequently drink soda or, better yet, water when you go out into the festivities. You will only help yourself as this might help you prevent a hangover the next morning.
4 Leave Valuables at Home.
With Carnaval, unexpected things can happen, so be smart and only take the utmost necessary items with you. Leave everything else at home. You might even want to temporarily switch back to an old phone.
5 Take A Cab
Do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, drink and drive. Once again, be smart and don’t try to impress anyone. Plan and ensure that you and your friends will be able to get home safe and sound.
Hopefully these tips can help you have great times when going out into the festivities. Be safe, stay responsible, but most of all: Have Fun!
